Race functions differently than it did in the 60s. We are in a generation where kids are being raised with touch screens. We have to change our argument, to evolve it, so that we can begin to address and tackle issues that by in far perpetuate the color discourse so as to keep us distracted from all the countless ways we are being oppressed, together, diversely. And move it fwd. Black is no longer the outcast of popular culture. It IS popular culture. Was Miley appropriating black as a color and minstrel representation or was she in fact trying to engage with the normative stamp of cool in this modern day? (Do the two points negate each other or somehow deepen the conversation?) Is twerking wrong because its wrong or because its done distastefully or because a white person is doing it? Abiodun of the Last Poets likes to say white people, all people, are the children of the African nation. If we have a problem with whiteness, we have responsibility also in our raising. Children who bite the hand that feeds them, are still children nonetheless. Bad parenting reflects a need to switch up the program. They observe and mimic that which has been taught. Also, there’s no mention of the fact that Miley is part of a long line of youth, exploited by the Disney nazi agenda. So much so that she along with many others have been pimped to the point of death ie: Jet Jackson last week. No body wants to talk about the oppressive realm of celebrity and the parasocial relationships people think they have with ppl they never met b4. we are in an era of interweb social networking and screen convos. the identifying voice of oppression with which many are forced to empathize with in America is blackness, however there are plenty of powerless people’s within and thruout this system searching for a means to rebel and shock the nature of how we function and all that we expect in this “politically correct” nation. Blackness is a moveable thing. It is not a brand or fancy club card.
